Kopi Luwak Coffee AKA Cat Poop Coffee
I had heard stories before that the supposed best coffee in the world is made out of coffee beans eaten and then pooped out by a weasel/cat-like creature. I immediately wrinkled and nose and said there was no way I was drinking anything derived from poop no matter how good it’s claimed to taste.
However, when I was brought to a Kopi Luwak farm, I decided, oh whatever let’s get it a try.
After all, the civet (that aforementioned weasel/cat-like creature) is cute, and also, poop is cute so…
“Kopi Luwak Coffee comes from Indonesia Island, an area well know for its excellent coffee. Also native to the area is a small civet-like animal called a Paradoxurus. the locals call them luwaks. These little mammals live in the trees and one of their favorite foods is the red, ripe, coffee cherry. They eat the cherries, bean and all. While the bean is in the little guy’s stomach, it undergoes chemical treatment and fermentation. The bean finishes its journey through the digestive system and exists. The still intact beans are collected from the forest floor and are cleaned, then roasted and ground just like any other coffee.”
