Taiwan’s Toilet-Themed Cafe AKA The Poop Cafe
For some strange reason that I have yet to figure out, Asian people are obsessed with making poop cute. You’ve seen it: the popular poop emoji with the smiley face, poop plushies, poop keychains, poop stickers, poop logos, poop anything that goes in Asia (and anything goes in Asia).
In Taiwan, they take this to a whole new level: the Poop Cafe a.k.a. Modern Toilet.
Modern Toilet is a Taiwanese-styled bubble tea house with a variety of Taiwanese light meals and snacks to choose from, typical of menus at any other bubble tea house. The attraction is that the entire cafe is modeled after artifacts that you typically find in a bathroom, namely, toilets.
The cafe is cute, colorful, and trendy and filled with young people mostly there for the novelty of eating in a cafe where everything is toilet-themed. Despite its unappetizing connotations and the fact that you are eating out of toilet-shaped bowls, the food served at Modern Toilet is delicious.
This is a squatter toilet filled with shaved ice and topped with lychee, marshmallows, pearls, mangoes, red beans, jelly, and condensed milk. If you’ve experienced squatter toilets especially in rural areas, this could be a sight to make you gag but trust me, it was fantastic.
On the way out, you are greeted with flowers in a toilet bowl. A farewell blessing for make your poop later smell better?
You know what, I’m going to stop.
Cheers and bon appetit!
